It’s the start of the Christmas season in our house now that Thanksgiving has come and gone and one of my favorite things to do around the Christmas holiday is making cookies! I have so many great memories of baking dozens of cookies with my mom leading up to Christmas and I want to make sure to start those traditions with my kids, too!

One of my favorite cookies to make is this soft & fluffy sugar cookie - they are seriously SO easy to make and are absolutely delicious! Growing up, we called these “Grandma’s Sugar Cookies” (that’s what is still written on the recipe card in my mother’s recipe box), but I’m sure everyone’s grandma has her own version of some type of sugar cookie recipe!

Usually, this recipe only comes out around Christmas time, but they are such an easy and simple recipe, that they can be for any holiday, really - just switch up the sugars and decorations that you add to the top! Last year, I decided to make these cookies around Easter time and used various sprinkles in my cabinet that worked well for some spring decorations! I used some green sugar from my Christmas sprinkles, pink sugar from my Valentine’s sprinkles, and other multi-colored sprinkle varieties that were already in my home.

If you decide to try out this recipe, let me know what kinds of sprinkles you decide to use!

Soft & Fluffy Sugar Cookies

Yield: 3-4 dozen cookies
Prep Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

• 1 cup sugar
• 2 eggs
• 1/4 cup butter
• 2 1/2 cups flour
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 2/3 cup milk
• 1/2 tsp vanilla

Instructions

Mix together sugar, eggs, and softened butter in a large mixer bowl.

Sift together flour, baking soda, and baking powder in a separate bowl.

Add a portion of the dry ingredients to the mixer (your large bowl with sugar mixture) and mix. Then add some of the milk mixture and beat together. Continue to alternate adding the dry ingredients, then the milk mixture to the batter until fully mixed. (Alternating ingredients a little bit at a time is important to allow the mixture to get a bit fluffy!)

Using spoons, drop batter onto baking trays (I like to line mine with parchment paper). Add your decorations and sprinkles to the drops of cookie dough. (Personally, I switch up and use a different type of sprinkle with each baking tray just because I like a variety!)

Bake cookies at 375º F for 8-10 minutes. (I actually bake these cookies for closer to 7 minutes in my oven, so they don't get too browned on the bottom or dried out.)

must-haves for cookie baking day!
