I don’t remember how long ago it was that I took my son to the library for the first time, but I remember that he was young enough that it felt unsuccessful. He was NOT interested in any of the books and just wanted to try the computers, even though he was a bit too young to understand how to use them. So the other day we decided to try again and stopped by the library so that I could pick out a book for myself and reassess his interest. He LOVES reading books at home, so I thought it was worth visiting the library for a few new books (that I don’t have to spend lots of money on). Once again, he mostly just wanted to play on the computer (which he was more successful at this time around), but I decided to pick out a few books anyway that I thought he would enjoy.
O was definitely more interested in the books once we got home and it got me thinking that it would be fun to share our library haul on the blog and give you my thoughts on each of the books that we read and share how our toddler seemed to enjoy the books (or not)! Our toddler is currently just a few months over 2 years old but has an active imagination, so I picked books that I thought he would enjoy based on his current interests (dinosaurs, monsters, trucks, etc.).
My Toddler’s Library Book Haul
February 2022
Toddler Book Review, Books for Toddlers, Picture Books for 2-year-olds, Library Books for Toddlers
Little Excavator by Anna Dewdney
Our toddler is ALL about construction vehicles these days, and he also really enjoys “Llama Llama Red Pajama” at home, so I thought this was a fun find! It’s a simple book with some rhyming, true to the Llama Llama rhyming style. O asked to read this book several times and stayed “tuned in” when we read it and enjoyed looking at the different construction vehicles throughout the book!
Llama Llama Home with Mama by Anna Dewdney
“Llama Llama Red Pajama” is a BIG hit in our house, so I thought it would be fun to read another of the Llama Llama books. But for some reason, this book didn’t hold my son’s attention quite the same way as the original. Perhaps I need to work on my voice inflections for this new book - that is definitely a big reason my son loves the original book.
I Want a Monster! by Elise Gravel
This book was probably the most popular of our library haul! It’s clear that this book was likely intended for an older reader audience, but it was still simple enough that it kept my 2-year-old’s attention and he really loved looking at all of the pictures of the different monsters.
Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs by Giles Andreae
This was another popular book with my toddler son! But how could it not be, with a combo of pirates and dinosaurs?! My husband described this book really well, saying it was like a nod to “Chronicles of Narnia” with their journey through the wardrobe - only this was a little boy going through a school supply closet to help a captain get his ship back from pirate dinosaurs. It was a super fun read and my son loved looking at all of the different dinosaur characters.
Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña
I had really high hopes for this book, but it just did not hold my son’s attention very well. I still loved the storyline and the characters and I think it’s a book that he might enjoy a bit more next year or when he is a bit older. I still highly recommend this book and love the diversity of the characters - it reminds me of my many summers in New York City!
